چکیده

We study self-assembly of surfactants in two dimensions using off-lattice Monte Carlo moves. Here the Monte Carlo moves consist of slithering snake reptation motion of the surfactant chains and kink-jump of the individual monomers. Unlike many previous studies an important feature of our model is that the solution degrees of freedom are kept implicit in the model by appropriate choice of the phenomenological interaction parameters for the surfactants. This enables us to investigate rather large systems with less number of parameters. The method is powerful enough to study multimicellar systems with regular and inverted micelles for both neutral and ionic surfactants. As a function of several parameters of the model, we study self-assembly of neutral surfactants into micelles of various forms and sizes and compute appropriate cluster-size distributions. Ionic surfactants exhibit, apart from micellization, additional intermicellar ordering. We further study the role of host particles to mimic recent experiments on surfactant-silicate cooperative self-assembly, and demonstrate the possibility of generalized pathways leading to host encased micellization. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~98!50124-9#

Self-assembly of ionic surfactants and formation of mesostructures

Self-assembly of ionic surfactants resulting in micelle formation is studied using off-lattice Monte Carlo simulation in two dimensions (2D). We find that in addition to the Lennard-Jones (LJ) interaction, which acts among all of the particles, a screened Coulomb interaction, acting only among the surfactant heads, makes the geometric arrangement of micelles very different compared to that for ...

A comparison of self-assembly in lattice and off-lattice model amphiphile solutions

Lattice Monte Carlo and off-lattice molecular dynamics simulations of h1t4 and h4t1 ~head/tail! amphiphile solutions have been performed as a function of surfactant concentration and temperature. The lattice and off-lattice systems exhibit quite different self-assembly behavior at equivalent thermodynamic conditions. We found that in the weakly aggregating regime ~no preferred-size micelles!, a...

DNA brick self-assembly with an off-lattice potential.

We report Monte Carlo simulations of a simple off-lattice patchy-particle model for DNA 'bricks'. We relate the parameters that characterise this model with the binding free energy of pairs of single-stranded DNA molecules. We verify that an off-lattice potential parameterised in this way reproduces much of the behaviour seen with a simpler lattice model we introduced previously, although the r...

Monte Carlo Simulations of the Phase Behavior of Surfactant Solutions

Phase diagrams are determined by Monte Carlo lattice simulations for idealized symmetric and asymmetric surfactant molecules mixed with single-site "oil" and "water" molecules. At high concentrations (above 20%) of surfactant, the simulations show the self assembly of liquid crystalline phases, including smectic, hexagonal, BCC sphere packings, and Ia3d gyroid cubic phases. The locations of the...

Lattice models of ionic systems with charge asymmetry

The thermodynamics of a charge-asymmetric lattice gas of positive ions carrying charge q and negative ions with charge 2zq is investigated using Debye–Hückel theory. Explicit analytic and numerical calculations, which take into account the formation of neutral and charged clusters and cluster solvation by the residual ions, are performed for z52, 3, and 4. As charge asymmetry increases, the pre...
